Until 1977, Côté taught beginner acting and improvisation at the Option Theatre in Ste. Therese. He later co-founded Vogagements, a tiny theatre. Côté began appearing in the play Broue at the theatre in 1979; the production was scheduled to run for one month but ended up being played in several locations across Canada, and Cote continued to participate in all of the more than 2,000 performances until 2008.

Côté portrayed the lead in the 1990 film Cruising Bar, for which he received a Genie Award nomination for Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role. He also portrayed the lead in the film C.R.A.Z.Y., for which he received a Genie in the same category in 2005.  In 2008, he resurrected his Cruising Bar characters in the sequel film Cruising Bar 2, for which he was nominated for a Jutra Award for Best Actor at the 11th Jutra Awards.

 

Côté starred in the 2009 film De père en flic, which grossed $10.5 million at the box office in Quebec. He starred as pilot Robert Piché in Piché: The Landing of a Man in 2010, and as Roger Gendron in A Sense of Humour in 2011.

In 1979, he co-founded Broue with Marc Messier and Marcel Gauthier.
