Fox grew up on Canadian military bases before relocating to Los Angeles at the age of 18. He received three Emmy Awards (1986–88) for his role as Alex P. Keaton on the popular television series Family Ties (1982–89), where he co-starred with his future wife Tracy Pollan. Later, he starred in Spin City (1996–2002), for which he won an Emmy in 2000, his final year on the show. Fox also appeared in feature films, most notably as Marty McFly in the 1985 hit comedy Back to the Future and its sequels (1989 and 1990). Other films in which he has appeared include Casualties of War (1989), The American President (1995), and Mars Attacks! (1996). Furthermore, he voiced Stuart Little in a series of animated films based on characters from E.B. White’s children’s book.

Michael J. Fox was born Michael Andrew Fox in 1961 in Edmonton, the capital of the Canadian province of Alberta, to parents William and Phyllis. (He later changed his name to “J” in honour of legendary character actor Michael J. Pollard.) Fox, a self-described “army brat,” moved several times as a child with his parents, brother, and three sisters. When William Fox retired from the Canadian Armed Forces in 1971, the Foxes settled in Burnaby, British Columbia (a Vancouver suburb).
