Martin Short is a Canadian comedian, actor, writer, and producer who subsequently became an American citizen. Short was born in Ontario, Canada, and graduated from university with a degree in social work, intending to work in social work; nevertheless, his aptitude as an actor paid off, and he was cast in his first play. He continued to work as an actor-comedian after that, largely on television and radio until relocating to New York. Martin Short performed in prominent comic shows on TV in America before going on to star in the extremely successful show ‘Saturday Night Live,’ which gave him a household figure.

Martin Short aspired to work as a social worker and planned to do so after graduating from college. However, he earned his first break as an actor in 1971, the same year he graduated, when he was cast in the play ‘Godspell.’ He met some well-known performers and worked in the drama ‘Fortune and Men’s Eyes’ the following year.
Short became the host of the music show ‘Right On’ in 1972 and subsequently became a member of the comic company ‘Toronto’s Second Comedy’. Martin Short spent seven years largely working in television and theatre in Canada before landing a role in the little-known American drama ‘The Associates.’
Martin Short received his big break in 1982 when he featured in the comedy show ‘Second City Television,’ more generally known as SCTV, after participating in the failed TV show ‘I’m a Big Girl Now.’ Martin Short was thrust into the spotlight by SCTV, and he quickly became a household figure.
