Rubén Doblas Gundersen is a Spanish-Norwegian internet personality and just like his citizenship, he has spent most of his life travelling back and forth between the two countries.
He was born in Mijas, Málaga, Andalusia, Spain. But he moved to Bergen, Norway when he was three with his mother. Because of his mother marrying another Spanish man, they moved back to Spain again.
El Rubius went to primary and secondary school in Madrid, Spain. When he was 16, his parents separated again, so he relocated to Norway again.
He got his first gaming console which was a Super NES. This really pushed him into the world of gaming and geek culture. During this time, he met Miguel Ángel Rogel Ruíz, better known by his online alias Mangelrogel or simply Mangel.
He got inspired and started to upload videos on his own YouTube channel named ‘Elrubius’ which was created on 3 April 2006. He says he chose that name as a play on words because he had blonde hair and his name was Ruben.
After finishing his schooling, he again returned to Spain with his Godfather Hector and started working as an intern at a supermarket. He then went on to do a degree in 3D Modelling and animation at the Arteneo School in Madrid, Spain.
He has two other YouTube channels, namely, elrubiusOMG, and Rubius Z. His second channel “elrubiusOMG” was created on 19 December 2011, because he could not become a YouTube partner on his first channel due to a strike. It is not known when he created his third channel.
His channels mostly focus on gameplays. But he also uploads vlogs, challenge videos, Q&A videos and sketch comedies.
In 2011, his channel started gaining popularity in Spanish-speaking countries. He posted a gameplay of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim which got him a lot of attention. He also posted videos of him on the Chatroulette Website which boosted his following again.
In 2012, he defeated fellow YouTuber WillyRex to become the most-subscribed Spanish YouTube channel. In February, 2013, he reached 1 million subscribers. And in February, 2015 he gained 10 million subscribers. By July 2018, he had 30 million subscribers. His YouTube channel has witnessed steady growth over the years.
El Rubius has made appearances in the 2015 and 2016 editions of YouTube Rewind.
On March 25 2018, El Rubius broke Ninja and Drake’s record for most concurrent viewers during a Fortnite stream and the record for most concurrent viewers on a YouTube Gaming Livestream with 1.1 million people tuning in. The tournament consisted of 99 other Spanish-speaking streamers who all broadcast the game to their own audiences. Altogether the Battle Royale tournament had over 42M live views.
El RUbius has published quite a number of books. In 2014, El Rubius published El Libro Troll, a book filled with interactive challenges.
He published his first comic book El Rubius Virtual Hero on 15 September 2015 through the Spanish publishing house called Planeta. The second part of the book named, Virtual Hero II: La Torre Impossible, was published in June 2016.
